May Day 2001

Malvern May Day 2001The Malvern Spa Association organised a water tasting competition as part of the May Day celebrations in Priory Park. Passers by were invited to sample water from six different sources – five from Malvern springs and one from a Malvern tap. Interspersed are a few pictures taken by Carly Tinkler on the day.

Surprisingly, out of nearly 100 entries, only 18 guessed correctly. Even more surprisingly, most of the correct entries were from children – perhaps their taste buds are as yet unspoiled – they could tell the difference immediately.

The winning entry came from Simon Rose of Malvern – he won a bottle of wine (fortunately he is over 18) and a hand-turned wooden bowl made by the chairman of the Spa Association, John Ford.

MSA Secretary Carly Tinkler said, “It was a wonderful day. The weather was kind to us and we had a lot of interest in the Association’s activities with new members joining up and others volunteering to help. Next year we will run the competition again and hope to have an exhibition of the work we have done”

For those who took part and would like to know what they were drinking, the correct answers were:

  1. Tap Water (From the Malvern Theatres)
  2. Earl Beauchamp’s Fountain (Cowleigh Road)
  3. Malvhina (Belle Vue Island)
  4. Holy Well (Holy Well Road)
  5. Evendine Spring (Top of Evendine Lane)
  6. Hayslad (West Malvern Road)

Many Thanks to all who took part.
